Mapping Health in Bologna

Medieval Bologna was a vibrant mixture of people and animals who lived and worked in close quarters, and shared the same streets, piazzas, and waterways. What did it means for them to maintain a healthy and safe city, and how did they go about pursuing their ideals of health?
Through GIS mapping and analysis of documentary and material sources, it is possible to examine the healthscape of the city at different scales. Click the slider to the left to learn how to use the map, explore the data sets and sources, and view the map.
